Architects get ready to wobble
Unknown Jun 05,2008
Architects Will Alsop, Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners and Foster & Partners lead the shortlist for the 2008 Architectural Jelly Design Competition – part of the 2008 London Festival of Architecture.

The designs will be transformed into real jellies, which will be judged on June 9, with the winner unveiled at a jelly banquet at University College London Quad.

Each entry will be judged on innovation, aesthetics and what the organisers term "wobble factor".

The ten shortlisted entries revealed on Wednesday have been chosen from over 100 entries around the globe.

The shortlisted entries have clearly taken the challenge seriously, with Iain McCaig even specifying what type of flavour the jelly should be – white-wine or champagne based with flavour of oranges added in the form of equal measures of orange Curacao and Grand Marnier.

Whilst Alex Mergold’s jelly entry (see attached pdf) attempts to provide a new “edible history” of Russia.

Afterwards the jelly moulds and preparatory material will be auctioned on behalf of Article 25, a charity dedicated to providing building expertise to aid agencies, NGOs and communities.

The competition is curated by foodsmiths Bompas & Parr.

Partner Harry Parr commented: “The shortlisted entries showcase the creativity of some of the world's very best architects, working on behalf of charity. Across the jellies a vast range of architectural motifs and techniques have been used to spectacular effect.

“Who will be the ultimate jelly architect?”
