We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
- Albert Einstein
If ever change was required, it is now. And, as is often the case, fresh thinking comes with the next generation. SRD Change 08, an exhibition from graduate students taking Sustainable Design to the next level, is evidence of this. Debuting at 6pm 23 September, at the TAP Gallery in Darlinghurst, Sydney, the SRD Change 08: Graduate Sustainable Design Exhibition will showcase 18 forward thinking green projects from our next generation of innovative designers.
See a proposal for an Eco-City precinct for Sydney's White Bay in 2050, a clever earthenware food cooler for remote communities, a Tangible change in fashion thinking, a unique design process for community workshops featuring sustainability that has already been successfully used with our indigenous community; and even a kitchen sink that reuses its water over and over.
There’s also:
"Lightway" - a solar window louvre system with organic LED's that make your windows a night light source.
"Bedu" - Emergency Rapid Response concept for a self contained emergency relief shelter and essential items.
"Free Products" - a concept from Tegan Fife that IKEA liked so much, they've given her a job with their design team.
This is the fifth year the exhibition has been staged. Many graduates this year and from previous presentations have been Australian Design Award finalists, with some even garnering global exposure. For example, Julie Frost’s potable water sterilisation project went on to be developed by an International aid agency, whilst Rachael Cassar’s reconstructed fashion pieces won the first prize in a major international award in Italy last year.
The design projects on show for 2008 span myriad disciplines, from the built environment, industrial (product) design through textiles and communications. They are drawn from the cream of the crop from Sydney’s universities. The exhibition is presented by the graduates themselves, with experienced mentoring from the Society for Responsible Design . The SRD, founded in 1989 is Australia’s, and one of the world’s, oldest green design organisations. For the past 19 years the SRD has been promoting environmentally and socially responsible design.
SRD Change 08 curator, Greg Campbell said that each year a new team of graduates collaborate in this production in a team environment, which provides real world experience stimulating yet more ideas and enhancing their career prospects. He went on to say that, through the SRD’s encouragement, the student participate in the skills of project incubation, networking, event management and sponsorship.
Individual exhibitors are available for interviews regarding their sustainable design initiatives. SRD Change 08: Graduate Sustainable Design Exhibition runs 23 - 28 September 2008 in the ground floor gallery space, of the TAP Gallery - 45 Burton St (cnr Palmer St), Darlinghurst, Sydney Australia.
Opening Night is set for 6pm Tuesday 23 September 2008.
