Inlay is one of the most intricate and complicated arts. It is the same work that adorns the Taj Mahal, one of the wonders of world and other Mughal monuments. The inlay of colourful stones on marble and sandstone (Kadappa- black stone) surfaces is characteristic of the Mughal period. It is said to have originated in Florence in Italy in 16th century, called “PIETRA DURA”. It was introduced in India in 17th century by the Mughals. The art of inlay is called "Parchin Kari". Its not a painting on stones.
