Alabaster is softer than marble and onyx. Alabaster is 2 on the Mohs scale while marble is 3. This means that marble is twice as hard as alabaster.

Alabaster is the colorful massive form of the mineral Gypsum. It is very soft and can be easily carved and sculpted using a regular knife. Onyx on the other hand is made of much harder microcrystalline Quartz.
