Schist Stone is formed from shale or mud but at a much higher temperature than slate. Schist is not a very strong rock, so it is not often used as a building material. However it can be used for garden decoration, paving and sometimes sculpture.

Slate is a fine-grained homogeneous sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash which has been metamorphosed so that it cleaves easily into thin layers while schist is any crystalline rock having a foliated structure and hence admitting of ready division into slabs or slates.
