Kocbeřský pískovec is the local name for sandstone quarried near the village of Kocbeře, which, together with the other sites of Kukský-stanovicky, Betlémský, Doubravický and Hradishtský sandstone that are not operated today, fall under the collective name of Královédvor sandstone. Sandstone has been mined in the village of Kocbeře since time immemorial, as evidenced by the now flooded quarry in the center of the village. Quarrying achieved a great boom in the Baroque period, mainly thanks to the extensive activities of Count Špork and the work of the sculptor Matyáš Bernard Braun, who created, among other things, the well-known set of Nativity sculptures from this type of sandstone.
Mining in the current quarry was started in the 1960s by the state enterprise Povodí Elbe, mainly for the purposes of water construction.
In 1992, the mining and processing company KOKAM, spol s.r.o. was founded, which bought the quarry and equipped it with equipment for the complete use of stone, including rough and fine stone production.
Kocber sandstone is a fine-grained, gray-white to yellowish quartz sandstone, one of the hardest and most durable sandstones currently mined in the Czech Republic, whose exceptional quality was proven by an extensive study comparing sandstones from different localities.
The mining method is frontal mining in individual mining sections. Sandstone stone from the upper floor is used for the production of crushed stone, quarry stone and elements of garden architecture. In the middle and lower floors of the quarry, blocks are mined for further processing by cutting into tiles and paving stones or by splitting them into building stone, paving blocks, tiles and split tiles.
