    WORKING CYCLE
    The GALILEO processing system is divided into two
    separate phases:
    1. THE SCANNING PHASE during which a 3D model of the slab is made. This makes it possible to detect with extreme accuracy the thickness at every point, the perimeter of the slab and the presence of hollow spots classified according to suitable criteria in order to then retouch them where necessary.
    2. THE STAGE OF APPLICATION OF THE RESIN AND SUCCESSIVE RITOUCH WORK IF NECESSARY is done by an anthropomorphic robot by an anthropomorphic robot that receives all the trajectories for applying the resin and the location/characteristics of the fractures to be restored from the scanning machine.

    Ares oven by Xilex dries water instantly both inside and on the surface of the stone slabs. This oven is intended for drying process on natural stone (marble and granite), artificial stone (quartz and cristobalite) and porcelain tile.
    Unlike conventional kilns, Ares effectively removes moisture by drying all cracks and holes so that the material is prepared for optimal filtering and resin adhesion in the next step on the production line.
    In addition, Ares is an instant oven since it performs an effective drying in just 2-3 minutes, a very short time in comparing to the drying of 30-60 minutes that conventional ovens require.     Instant start with 100% efficiency. This is a great added value compared to conventional systems, which require one hour of preheating.

    This system gives the reliability to transfer very fragile stone from quarries to stone factories without any loss of material.     The Method:
    By means of pressure water, firstly the block will be washed. After that, by using a drying room, the block will be dried. Just after the resin injection process, the block is transferred into the pressure vessel and by using a pressure cycle, a very deep penetration and a really strong cover around the block and slabs will be guaranteed.     Leonardo allows to realize the same treatment process and working conditions of the bigger resin lines but with a reduced level of investment.

    A tilting cart allows the loading of slabs directly onto the trays. The tray with slab is inserted in the drying oven by means of an elevator.
    Once the slab has been dried the lifter extracts and transfers it on a special mobile working bench, reachable on his four sides by the operator.
    On this bench the dried slab is “buttered” with resin and then transferred to the oven-curing store.

    The static store is characterised by the fact that the frame containing the slab is inserted at a level or floor of the store and is left there until the end of the thermal treatment that, according to the position in the line, may be drying of the slab or polymerisation of the resin applied to it. The store is equipped with a thermal unit that distributes hot air in a balanced way to the various floors as well as along the slab.
    The power of the thermal unit varies according to the number of floors and also according to the use of the store (drying of slabs or polymerisation of the resin).

    The cyclic store is characterized by the fact that all of the slabs being processed, placed on special frames, follow the same run and, finally, undergo the same thermal treatment.
    Another advantage in terms of uniformity of the treatment that the slabs undergo, is generated by the fact that the frames form two columns, one moving up and one moving down. This construction feature allows for the use of two separate thermal units that collide the two columns with hot air from opposite sides.
    Another important characteristic is the extremely reduced cycle time that allows for use in plants of an extremely high level of production.

    APP - POLYMER APPLICATOR FOR SLAB POLISHING LINES

    The Polymer Applicator (APP) is a cost efficient and environmentally sustainable method for protecting polished surfaces of slabs when they are stacked in “packs” and when being handled and moved.

    WHAT IS BRETON APP?

    Breton APP is a specific system mounted just before the automatic slab discharge unit at the end of the polishing line. It is designed to apply dots or lines of a thermoplastic polymer.

    The number, the interval between dots/lines and form can be programmed to specific requirements. This polymer has been developed and formulated to protect the polished surface of slabs when they are stacked in “packs” in the warehouse and when being handled.

    APP is an alternative system to the conventional polythene film offering the advantage of not having to deal with waste treatment and relative costs.

    The polymer is purchased in granules in drums of 25 kg.

    The granules are heat melted in the purpose container (1) and the melted polymer is conveyed along the heated piping (2) to the extruder gun which is also heated (3) and moves transversally.

    The extruder gun, depending on the form programmed, deposits dots or lines of melted polymer on the polished surface of the slab. The polymer instantly cools down and solidifies when it comes into contact with the cold slab and remains bonded to the surface.

    THE DRYING OF SLABS BEFORE RESIN-TREATING

    Different techniques for the slab drying were tested (static hot-air drying with air dehumidification, hot-air passage, irradiation passage, static radio-frequency, etc.) and their advantages and disadvantages in terms of output and operating costs were crosschecked.

    Breton suggests the most suitable drying techniques according to the type of resin used, the material to be resin-treated (marble or granite) and the required production capacity.As for the static hot-air drying with air dehumidification, Breton developed special multi-decker vertical kilns ensuring a “homogeneous” drying of all the slabs housed in the kiln.

    Depending on the requirements, slabs move along the automated resin-treating line while they are held up by special, rigid steel supports.Breton suggests the most suitable catalysis techniques according to the type of resin used, the material to be resin-treated (marble or granite) and the production capacity.As to the static catalysis of the resin-treated slabs, Breton developed special vertical multi-decker kilns with hot-air circulation which ensure an ideal catalysis of the slabs housed in the kiln.

    The catalysis of marble slabs treated with polyester resin may also be performed in line, while they return to the loading point and move on a conveyor placed under the processing line along its longitudinal axis, with no need of kilns.

    For resin treatment with epoxy systems curing is currently carried out in static multiple tier ovens with forced air circulation (approximately 50°C), with slab holding time in the oven of around 80 minutes. In general, following oven curing the customary 24 hour period is allowed to elapse before proceeding with the polishing stage.

    Recently, technological evolution has made it possible to positively consider also the use of curing microwave systems.

    That's why the Breton Research Centre has been performing detailed studies to assess the capabilities and efficacy of using microwaves to accelerate resin hardening.

    It should be emphasised that microwave curing ovens are rather different from normal ovens in that the former are complex, carefully studied and calibrated systems that combine microwave radiation with hot air convection heating.

    During the research project we used various types of commercial resins: normal epoxy systems and "specific" epoxy systems designed for microwave curing.

    The test results showed that microwave curing epoxy resins are highly reactive and display greater receptivity to microwave radiation. It was found that the combined microwave/hot air system effectively accelerates heating and successive hardening of the resin.

    The annexed graph shows the exothermic reaction curve during hardening of two epoxy resins at 50°C, one of which is a normal resin and the other a microwave curing resin.

    There are now two treatments with a new phase:
    Block washing: by means of a high pressure hydraulic nozzle utilized by an operator
    Dry of blocks: by means of drying chamber heated by means of gas or electric hot air generators
    Preparation of block to be hardened: to be realized in the apposite area. It is a completely manual operation developed by means of material provided in the supply (bridge crane excluded)
    Vacuum and resin-resin injection: to be realized inside the machine. The block to be repair is covered into a special device and after resin is injected into the block after the creation of vacuum
    Pressurization on the hardened block (with the Hrvp Extended system only): to do inside the surge tank of the plant line just after the injection of resin. The special pressuring cycle makes resin deep penetrating inside all fractures of the block, completely reinforcing and improving it
    Catalysis of reinforced block: once the blocks have been reinforced and hardened they are placed inside hardening chambers that previously have been heated by means of electric or gas generator until the resin becomes hard
    CHARACTERISTICS RESINS
    We use bi-component epoxy resins studied properly for the HRVP process. The special formulations produced change according to the material of the block to be worked and to its fractures.
    The plant sale contract includes the resins supply for a period to be established during the negotiations.
