About Grey Stone Lanterns, Mailboxes : Japanese style Stone Lantern (ishidoro) is a traditional Asian garden lantern made of granite, basalt, sandstone, wood, or metal. Like many other elements of Japanese traditional architecture, it originated in China where they can still be found in Buddhist temples and Chinese gardens. They were represented to Japan from China via Korea at some time during the 6th century as part of the arriving Buddhist tradition, with the light held in the lamp representing the teachings of the Buddha that help overcome the darkness of ignorance. Stone lanterns are not as common in Korea and Vietnam as they are in China or Japan.
