An excellent characteristic of slate is that it is waterproof, thus slate can be used for bathroom floors, driveways, pool areas, etc. For the same reasons slate is resistant to stains, which makes slate flooring an ideal choice for the kitchen where drips and stains are common.

Slate flooring provides an extremely unique look, but is a fairly maintenance-free flooring compared to granite tiles, the most popular natural stone. Granite is a harder material and although it also requires sealing, you won't need to do this as often as you would with slate.

Slate has long been used outdoors and in wet areas, and the natural properties of stone do not make it slippery. Slate is also highly resistant to bacteria such as green fungus infestation, which significantly increases the chances of slipping when wet.
