Dauter Stone is a first generation family owned Calgary business, operating since 1977. Wolfgang Dauter is his family’s third generation to train as a tilesetter. He emigrated to Canada from Germany and founded the business with a partner, Ed Bordt, in 1977. A year later, the rest of the family immigrated, and Wolfgang’s father, Ewald Dauter, joined the partnership. Ewald retired in 1985, and Ed Bordt also left the company. Manfred Dauter joined his brother Wolfgang as partner. A third brother, Ulrich Dauter, became a co-owner in early 1990. All three are involved full time in the day to day operation of the commercial division. The residential countertop division is managed by Brian Leschyshyn since it was launched in the mid 1990s.
The company began by installing ceramic tile for residential and commercial projects. Growth was moderate and carefully managed, allowing the company to ride out large fluctuations in the economy and the construction industry through the 1980s. By the 1990s, larger and more complex commercial projects were successfully undertaken, and the Dauters were acquiring greater and greater expertise in handling stone slab cladding, exterior and interior, as well as the ceramic tile installations. The brothers gradually purchased stone processing equipment which enabled more sophisticated and faster production.
By 1994, there was a growing demand for granite countertops in residences. Dauter Stone got on board in the early days of this industry, and began building up a separate division to manufacture and install countertops. At that time, there were only a handful of manufacturers in Calgary; now there are more than 70, following diverse business models and offering a wide assortment of products and product standards. Today the company does thousands of countertops and maintains an extensive inventory of beautiful stone slabs, representing several stone types: granite, natural quartzite, marble, limestone, soapstone and quartz (engineered), including many exclusives.
