Company History: Surfaces By Design is new only in name. Surfaces By Design combines the strengths of Tile & Stone Company, Lake Superior Stoneworks, and Carpets Plus Color Tile, with a cumulative 40 years in business. We have expert staff providing top quality service, in a brand new expanded showroom.
Tile & Stone Company evolved from a Franchise start up in 1992 called The Tile Shop, located at 1731 Miller Trunk Highway in Duluth, MN. We boasted “We Tile The Northland”, and we did. From Ely to Hinckley, Grand Rapids to Ashland, the North Shore, the Iron Range, upper Wisconsin lakes area, and locally in Duluth, Cloquet, Hermantown, and Superior. Our vast range of tile found its way into homes, cabins, entrys, kitchens, and baths.
Lake Superior Stoneworks began operations in 2000, located at 4440 Venture Avenue in Duluth. Fabricators and Installers of Natural Stone including granite, marble, limestone, and soapstone. We enjoyed our part of a production of Home Time, a Minneapolis area based remodeling and home improvement show.
Carpets Plus Color Tile is a licensed location of that buying group opening in 2004 at 5009 Matterhorn Drive, Duluth. This store brings a wide array of flooring products to the market, with professional installation in each product category available. Our buying group affiliation allows us to bring superb values to the home and business owner, who is seeking the most current looks available today, in the right color, the right texture, and the right price. Our projects include residential and commercial spaces, tile backsplashes, luxury vinyl for retail stores, carpet in classrooms, cork office floors, wood dining rooms, and bamboo entry areas. In 2011 we began exploring the addition of cabinetry to our product mix, and did so by partnering with Holiday Cabinetry and StarMark Cabinetry.
In combining these three entities and relocating staff, inventory, and display into our expanded 20,000 S/F building at 5009 Matterhorn Drive, today we are proud to share with you one of the premier showrooms of flooring, cabinetry, and countertops in Northern Minnesota.
Owner Scott Mellem has been in the flooring business in Duluth since 1985 when he was the Manager at Color Tile on Central Entrance. He started his own flooring business in 1992 as a franchise of The Tile Shop and remained at that location on Miller Trunk Highway until 2009. He purchased the current location in 2003, with a store affiliated with the Carpets Plus Color Tile buying group. Scott started Lake Superior Stoneworks, the stone countertop fabricating business, in 2000. These 3 businesses are now merged under one roof, under one name – Surfaces By Design – to better serve your complete flooring, kitchen, and bath needs.
